HUDDERSFIELD Eagles junior badminton club finished second in a triangular tournament for the Ian Broadbent Memorial Trophy.

Calderdale took the silverware at The Ridings Sports Centre in Halifax, with Bradford in third place.

Twenty four players took part, half of them coached in Huddersfield at the Eagles, with four boys and four girls in each team.

Matches proved very close, the final sets of games being mixed doubles.

The Huddersfield League donated the Ian Broadbent trophy – which was used for junior events a number of years ago.

Broadbent was one of three founder members of Youth Badminton and his commitment and experience of the game was a great help in forming their teams.

As a selector and coach he became their manager, and these teams later represented Kirklees in Yorkshire Schools’ badminton events.

After he passed away, Graham Howe along with his wife, Linda, continued to develop youth badminton in Kirklees.

Huddersfield Eagles were set up to carry on giving youngsters the opportunity to play badminton when the Howes retired.

Mike Hall, the Eagles chairman and coach, commented: “'The quality of badminton was excellent and all the players deserve a lot of credit.

“We’re very grateful that the League have donated this trophy. I recently spoke with Graham Howe and he was delighted that the Eagles were taking part and the trophy was being used to honour Ian’s name.”

Huddersfield Eagles play on Sunday mornings at Newsome Sports College and are coached by Badminton England qualified coaches. More information visit www.huddersfieldeagles.co.uk
