ANNA WHITWAM and Jacob Birkenhead emerged from two hours of intense badminton to be winners at the Huddersfield Eagles Christmas tournament at Newsome High.

They took the honours in the event for intermediate and advanced players, Josh Dyson and Daniel Whitworth also reaching the keenly-contested two-set final featuring some excellent rallies.

In the beginners section, the standard of badminton was excellent and, again, the competition was closely fought with Jake Metcalf and Anton Roche emerging the overall winners.

A total of 28 players took part and in the beginners, the players played both with and against each other.

In the inter/advanced, players partnered each other in a series of matches to determine the four players with the highest points total overall, with Whitwam and Birkenhead winning the grand final.

The Eagles invited coach Graham Howe to the event to speak to the youngsters and present certificates and prizes. The Eagles took over his Sunday sessions four seasons ago.

Mike Hall, Eagles coach and chairman said: “Our thanks go to John Crowther and all our coaches and helpers who staged the event and helped to produce an exciting tournament enjoyed by all.

“It was also great to see Graham Howe, he’s done a lot for junior badminton over the years and he’s always been very supportive of what the Eagles are doing.”
