KIRKBURTON A are celebrating their first decisive victory in a number of years over Holmfirth in the Huddersfield Badminton League Division I.
Holmfirth were not at full strength having their first and second men missing, and Kirkburton made them pay with a 7-2 success.
In the first men’s, Zainal Mohammed (who was playing up from Holmfirth’s second team) and Keith Sandiford fought hard and succeeded in scraping a well-deserved win – taking it 22-20 in the third end against Luke Denbigh-White and Mandeep Soor.
However, Denbigh-White found his form when teamed with the experienced Robert Sykes to win in straight sets (21-19, 24-22), while third pair Soor and Sykes beat Mohammed and Ford convincingly 21-11, 21-10.
Meanwhile, the Kirkburton ladies Lesley Radley and long-time partner Anne Bricklebank won in a close game against Lisa Pearson and Caroline Bottomley 21-13, 21-19.
Radley went on to win her next ladies game with Jenny Oldroyd in straight sets (21-13, 21-19), while third pair Bricklebank and Oldroyd beat Bottomley and Haigh in a see-saw three-set game 21-15, 11-21, 21-17.
In the mixed, Soor and Oldroyd lost to Sandiford and Pearson in a game that could have gone either way 21-10, 20-22, 18-21), while Denbigh-White and Radley beat Mohammed and Bottomley 21-10, 21-11, and Sykes and Bricklebank beat Ford and Haigh 21-18, 21-12.
