VALLEY St James A stretched their lead at the top of the Huddersfield Badminton League’s First Division with an emphatic 7-2 ‘away’ win against the club’s B string.
The B team were looking to improve their own assault on the division – they currently lie third in the table – but came off second best.
The victory also saw Valley A’s Helen Calverley and Sam Jessop continue their unbeaten run in the ladies section.

Ladies: Helen Calverley and Sam Jessop beat Sue Leigh and Rachel Fay 21-11 21-7, Calverley and Karen Hurst beat Leigh and Laura Wall 21-23 13-21 21-17, Jessop and Hurst lost to Fay and Wall 21-23 24-22 18-21.
Mixed: Clarke and Jessop beat Ward Fay 21-11 21-12, Mellor and Calverley beat Clegg and Leigh 21-9 21-12, Field and Hurst lost to Jones and Wall 21-12 17-21 15-21
In Division III there was a very tight encounter between two of the struggling sides with Royds Hall B winning at Kirkburton D 5-4.
The scores were tied going into the final mixed match and the contest brought the best out of Angela Branson, who stepped up from Royds Hall C for the winners and was the only unbeaten player.
