THIRTEEN-year-old Amy Crowther proved to be one of the star turns when Kirkburton E defeated St Cuthberts Racqueteers B in a Huddersfield Badminton League Divison V clash.

Crowther dropped just one game, and that was a very close one, on the way to winning two of her three rubbers which played a major part in Kirkburton winning the match 5-4.

She teamed up with Claire Ellam and Diane Clifford to win both her ladies’ rubbers against Lynda Fielding (playing up at No1) and another 13-year-old, Claire Kenny, who was then joined by Pam Mellor.

Racqueteers were on top after the men’s rubbers, Mohammad Tayyab and Geoff Steel beating Mike Cordner and 15-year-old Billy Pradey after Cordner and John Mellor had given Burton the ideal start, before Graham White and Steel made it 2-1 to the home side.

However, Ellam and Clifford won the opening ladies, and with two wins for youngster Crowther, Kirkburton were well placed going into the Mixed.

Tayyab and Fielding pulled a point back, but Mellor and Ellam wrapped up victory after toughing out the first game 25-23. St Cuthbert teenager Kenny then grabbed her first win of the season, along with Steel, to beat the Burton youngsters of Pradey and Crowther in a three-setter.

Ossett’s first home game of the season was a pretty unusual affair for their match with Spen Valley ended at ‘normal time’ with the score on 4-4, when the decision was taken to complete the match at a later date.

So three weeks later, the final ladies’ rubber took place and ended in a victory for Sue Wiles and Gemma Swaine over Judith Halliwell and Hannah Young to seal a 5-4 win for Spen.
