LONGWOOD’S Richard Binks (left) rounded off his Yorkshire cyclo-cross series with a battling second place in the eighth and final round at Myrtle Park, Bingley.

Binks – who already had the veterans’ title wrapped up – found the technical and muddy course less to his liking than former national and international rider Steve Barnes (Seacroft Wheelers), who finished first in the Bradford RCC promotion.

Andy Marshall of the Brighouse-based VS Cycles team finished sixth, one place ahead of Mirfield’s Louise Robinson, who now races with Stourbridge CC.

Of the other local riders Andy France (Holme Valley Wheelers) was 16th, John Ginley (Condor RC) 17th, Richard Burnham (Condor RC) 31st, Andy Blanshard (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) 40th and Richard Edwards, of Golcar (WY Police) 45th.

The senior race was won by Burley-in-Wharfedale’s Mark Thwaites, more than two minutes ahead of Chris Young (Team Marie Curie), with Lindley’s Miles Chandler (Aire Valley RT) 13th.

Huddersfield Road Club’s Andy Whitworth won Sunday’s Moorland Mayhem duathlon at Greetland All-Rounders Club in a field of 50.

The event – an 8k bike race sandwiched between 5k and 3k runs – was staged on a similar course to that used in the previous week’s cyclo-cross race.

Sunday’s event was filmed by crews from the Paul O’Grady TV show who were following the progress of one of their presenters. She came last.

Tributes will by paid at Saturday’s Holme Valley Wheelers’ dinner and prize presentation at the Old Bridge, Holmfirth, to club member Peter Smith, whose death in an incident on the A1 in North Nottinghamshire was reported in last night’s Examiner.
