MARSH UNITED had four winners to three but ended up losing by nine points as Almondbury Liberal Club lifted the Huddersfield Veterans League’s Team Knockout Trophy.

Lindley Private Bowling Club hosted the final and league officials were delighted with the help offered by their members.

After the opening three pairs Almondbury had a 14-point lead which could have been more had not Bill Blackburn and Walter Pell fought back from 15-3 down to win 21-17.

Almondbury got off to a good start in the singles when Donald Crowther beat Trevor Blackburn 21-8.

Victories for Marsh’s Trevor Sykes, who beat Tony Young 21-10, and Philip Bottom, who triumphed over Bernard Jones 21-14, put Marsh within nine points of Almondbury but Johnny Patchell’s 16 points against Roy Tipple assured them of victory.

Almondbury received the Frank Griffin Trophy and £150 which was presented by Andrew Tyers, of competition sponsors Armitages Garden Centres.
