ASHLEY DAYKIN picked up £700 by winning the big Moorside Classic competition.

Having won the Marsh £1400 competition and reaching two finals at Fleetwood, Daykin was delighted the take the Moorside, which could even earn him passage to the Champion of Champions via the reserve list.

Netherton Con star Daykin played Great Manchester away-team captain Andy Buckley (Chadderton) in the final and won 21-16.

Buckley had knocked out Graeme Wilson, who had earlier beaten top-ranked Gary Ellis.

Daykin showed his battling qualities to get past twice-Moorside winner Darren Griffiths (Tonge) in the first round, coming from 11-2 and 16-10 down to win 21-18.

Lee Lawton – who won the All England at ICI many years ago – was next to suffer at Daykin’s hands, being beaten to 13, while Yorkshire county teammate Liam Griffin (Pudsey) was beaten by the same scoreline in the semi-finals.

Daykin then maintained that fine form in the showpiece, showing he’s in solid form for the Yorkshire Cup final against Thongsbridge at Almondbury Lib this coming Sunday.

Daykin will also make his 95th appearance for Yorkshire when they play the County Championship final home leg at Marsh United on Sunday, September 2.

On September 17, he plays Buckley again in the last 64 at Waterloo.
