Ashley Daykin won the Griffin Classic.

It’s one of the top prizes at the Colne Valley winter bowling venue – featuring a glass goblet trophy presented over 20 years ago by Barrie Cotterell – and Yorkshire county stalwart Daykin carried it off thanks to a 21-10 showpiece victory over Duncan Reeves.

PM Autos of Longwood sponsored the event, which was played among deep puddles on the green and very soggy conditions.

While it dried up after the first round, it was heavy going all through and Daykin played the green better than anyone to take the spoils.

The final was refereed by Peter Kain, representing sponsor Paul Manning of PM Autos, and Daykin got off to a flier to lead 16-3 at the 14th end.

Reeves – who had put out Steven Hirst in a 21-20 thriller in the first round – managed to get back to 16-7 at the 17th end, but then Daykin capitalised on the big lead by getting the five needed to win.

Club president Alan Hirst thanked Mark and Wendy for their work in the kitchen, greenkeeper Eddie Haigh, secretary and organiser Frank Greenwood and made special mention of the sponsor PM Autos.

He then presented the prizes before Daykin responded by endorsing all that Hirst had said, thanking everyone who took part and praising the sponsors, reminding everyone that without their help the club would find it difficult to maintain such high standards.
