CHRISTINE MIZON touched top form on a visit to the seaside.

The Almondbury Bowling Club player won the Ladies Fleetwood Shield competition and £120 prize with a victory at the annual Freeport Fleetwood Bowling Festival.

She defeated Gay Cooper (Birkenhead), who had won the principal ladies event last year and had gone within two games of winning the £1,000 final prize again this year, 21-19 in the final at the Marine Gardens.

But Christine had an even closer tussle in the semi-final, gaining a 21-20 success against Jean Walsh (Burnley) with the last wood of the game.

Christine’s success, however, had earlier had a bizarre twist to it.

In her second-round game she had a 17-15 lead before officials stepped in to tell her she had been paired with the wrong opponent, so she had to start all over again against different opposition in torrential rain.

Christine Kaye (Cowcliffe Lib) partnered Alan Derby (Radcliffe) to success in the seven-up pairs event and Jean Wilkinson (Hemplow) finished runner-up to Maureen Lyons (Liverpool) in the Ladies Consolation tournament.

The winners of the £1,000 prizes in the two main events were Gary Ellis (Manchester), men’s singles, and Cath Lockwood (Preston) in the ladies.

Both go into their respective Champion of Champions cards at the Waterloo Hotel, Blackpool, later in the year.
