NEWSOME WMC duo Thomas Holmes and Nathan Haigh are the new champions of the Norma Haigh Charity Shield Mixed Pairs.
Both were on top form and Holmes had to defeat his sister, Aimee, who was partnering Chloe Ghaffar (also Newsome), to take the honours 21-13 in the showpiece.
The winners confidently defeated Thomas Marsland and Matthew Payne of Penistone in the quarter finals, before securing another comfortable win over another Penistone pairing, Anton Haigh and Daniel Marsland, in the semis.
In the other quarter-finals, Nathan Oakes and Courtney Allert of Newsome and Almondbury had a narrow victory over Thomas Jones and Ashton Allert (also Almondbury), to secure a place in the semis against Aimee Holmes and Ghaffar, who had a comfortable 21-7 win over Jack Chesswas and Matthew Lawrence (Brockholes).
The semi-final proved to be a very nip-and-tuck affair until the girls eventually managed to run out 21-16 winners, setting up the Holmes brother-sister final.
In that, the girls got off to a good start but Haigh and Holmes were always right behind them. It wasn’t clear which way the final was going to go until the boys’ experience eventually told and they posted that 21-13scoreline.
Sponsors of the competition, Terry Haigh and Christine and Kevin Walsh were thanked, as were all at Newsome WMC for their efforts and all the catering volunteers.
