ASHLEY DAYKIN was the proud winner of the Bernard Sigsworth Memorial bowling competition at the Griffin.

Daykin’s bowling matched the glorious weather as he scored a 31-23 victory over Netherton Con colleague Jack Dyson in the final.

Dyson has had a very successful season at the Colne Valley winter venue, but Daykin’s experience proved too much and he collected the £250 first prize and the trophy.

Having come through the earlier qualifiers from a big field, Daykin defeated Eddie Haigh in the quarter-finals and Peter Read in the semis.

Griffin president Alan Hirst thanked greenkeeper Haigh for providing a superb green, Carron and Paul for refreshments and secretary Frank Greenwood for all his efforts in organising the event.

Most importantly he expressed the thanks of all the club members to the Sigsworth family, who sponsor the prestigious event.

Daykin was delighted to have finally won the trophy and, in the presentation, he recalled memories of Bernard and his father, John, playing in the Works League when he was a youth. He said it made the win extra special for him.

Dyson commented he was happy with his form after beating two top players – Steven Hirst and David Scott – but that Daykin played some inspired bowls when required.

Mrs Sigsworth, who presented the prizes, was herself presented with an arrangement of flowers as a token of the club’s appreciation.

Quarter-finals – R Mozley 14 D Scott 31, S Hirst 21 J Dyson 31, P Read 31 C Gant 21, E Haigh 26 A Daykin 31.

Semi-finals – Scott 14 Dyson 31, Read 21 Daykin 31.

Final – Dyson 23 Daykin 31.

Frank Greenwood won the latest Griffin Sixteen after a thrilling final against Richard Mozley.

Mozley was lying game at 20-19 in the last end and Greenwood played his last bowl hoping to pick up the jack.

Instead, he went in off Mozley’s wide bowl to win the end and the final Sixteen of the season.

Greenwood – who defeated Paul Sigsworth in the first round and bowled well throughout – thanked sponsor David Walkden and said he was delighted to claim one of the few places left in the Champion of Champions on April 4.
