ELLIS OWEN of Newsome WMC is the new Springwood Girls Under 18 Handicap champion.

In the semi-finals Owen beat her clubmate Lauren Haigh 21-6 to book her place in the final, while Melissa Hoyle won a tough encounter with Aimee Holmes 21-17.

In the final Owen opened up a 12-8 lead only for Hoyle to pull the scores level three ends later.

However, Owen took control of the game and sealed success five ends later with a 21-12 victory.

the event was sponsored by Dennis Hawes and the Huddersfield Ladies Bowling Association, which was held at Springwood BC.

This popular girls competition gave spectators an excellent exhibition of bowling from the town’s young ladies.

David Ryding and Jason Booth beat Penistone duo Anton Haigh and Daniel Marsland to win the Thorpe Green Under 16 mixed pairs handicap.

In the semi-finals young Newsome WMC pairing of Daniel Beaumont and Harry Jackson were 15 across before the Yorkshire junior pairing of Booth and Ryding saw the game out.

Rory Morgan and Nathan Haigh, of Newsome WMC, gave South Yorkshire juniors Haigh and Marsland a hard time before finally going down 21-13.

In the final Booth and Ryding held a 13-10 lead after 15 ends, but Haigh and Marsland came back to be ahead three ends later.

Booth and Ryding then had their best spell going into a 19-14 lead, but the Penistone duo rallied again to make it 19-17.

However, the Bradley and Colne team were not to be denied, winning 21-17.

They were presented with their trophy by Huddersfield president Kevin Walsh.
