YOUNG Jack Dyson went within an ace of landing the Yorkshire Merit title in a superb finals day at Almondbury Liberal Club.
While last year’s winner Nicky White didn’t defend because he was watching Sheffield United at Wembley, Dyson played his part in what was the best final for some years.
Unfortunately for him, however, Lower Hopton WMC’s Lee Lawton proved just too strong in a thrilling climax to the event and ran out the 21-18 winner.
It was a fitting finale to a day of tremendous bowling which was appreciated by a large, sun-drenched crowd, and Dyson looked in fine fettle when he defeated Netherton Con’s Ashley Daykin 21-12 in the semi-finals, gaining revenge for his defeat in the Huddersfield Merit final at Rastrick in 2007.
He maintained that form into the final, but just came up short.
There had been hopes that Netherton Con’s Paul Sigsworth might finally land ‘the big one’ but he went out in the quarter-finals.
