RAY WHITWAM booked his place in the Griffin Inn’s end of season showpiece the ‘Champion of Champions’.

In Saturday’s Sixteen winner Whitwam faced the strong favourite Ashley Daykin in the quarter-finals and was at one point leading 17-8, but Daykin got back to 18-20 before Whitwam got another single to secure a good win.

In the semi-final against Richard Brook and the final against Mark Bramall, Whitwam continued playing consistently well and was always in front.

There has been a boost for the Huddersfield Veterans Bowling League whose competition starts next week.

Five new teams will be taking part in the six-man competition, with the league again also running a 10-man league.

The league also has a new president this season with Brian Woodhead taking the reins and new vice-president is Derek Gee.

Entries are being taken for the Hove Edge Easter Monday competition to be played on Monday, April 25.

The entry is limited to 64 bowlers who will be playing for prize money of £350, with playing starting at 10.00.
