JUST a week after Paul Sigsworth claimed the Huddersfield Champion of Champions crown, the Netherton Con ace followed up with victory in Spen Victoria’s first winter bowling competition.

And hours later he also won the Griffin’s first Sixteen of the winter campaign.

At Spen Victoria, Sigsworth won £160 after victories over Liam Griffith (21-12) before beating James Hanson 21-14 in the final.

And in the Griffin’s opening competition he beat Alan Crowther, competing in his first season at the private bowling club, 21-16 in the sun-drenched final.

In his first game against Martin Sykes, who played the corners really well, Sigsworth struck a total of seven times to get out of trouble to win 21-18.

Afterwards a delighted Sigsworth praised the efforts of new greenkeeper Eddie Haigh for a surface described by several members as being in the best condition for the first competition of a new season of all time.

Griffin members are reminded that the pairs preliminaries, played on Sunday, October 26, will be drawn this Sunday, so names should be put down as soon as possible to be included in the draw.

Robert and Ryan Lloyd, from Castleford, won the annual Thongsbridge CBC Adult/Junior pairs competition with a 21-6 victory against Steven and Anton Haigh in the final.

The opening few ends suggested a much closer contest with the lead changing hands several times with the Haighs leading at 6-3.

But the Lloyds won the jack and Ryan Lloyd lead consistently well on a straight mark corner to corner which Anton and Steven couldn’t match.

The quarter-finals were all keenly contested with the eventual winners going through 21-20 against Jack Dyson and Nathan Haigh.

Neil Slattery and Amy Holmes, who were first round substitutes, made it all the way to the semi-finals with a 21-17 win over Barry Conolly and nine-year-old Jade Davidson.

Adam Kelk and Aidan Fox – the young guns from Lower Hopton – put out previous winners Ashley Daykin and Josh Bojczuk 21-18 while Gary Hanson and Aron Williams, from Stocksbridge Friendship, were quarter-final losers 21-13 to the Haighs.

The competitive nature of the quarter-finals wasn’t reflected in the semi-finals with both finalists winning their respective games 21-5.

The prizes were presented on the evening by Howard Rose, of Roses Cleaning Services.
