WAYNE DEWS proved himself king of the ice to land a place in the Griffin Champion of Champions final.

Mastering the frozen surface – which resembled an ice-rink rather than a bowling green – Dews showed plenty of guile to chalk up four straight wins to land the latest Sixteen.

The nearest any of his challengers got was to 14, while in the final of the event which was sponsored by Paul Gibson of Ace Tiling, he defeated Dave Walkden 21-11.

It was tough going all the way through, with players hardly daring to lift their feet on the slipper and treacherous surface.

Mark Richardson had the foresight to take along his golf shoes with spikes and was able to walk normally, but even he went out at the first hurdle, 21-19 to Walkden.

Thankfully there were no accidents and, by the time of the final, half the green was thawing very quickly, which added a different dimension to the conditions.

Dews took control early on to establish a 13-5 lead and, after that, never looked back before securing aŠ comfortable win.

He will now go forward to the end-of-season Champion of Champions showdown.
