BRIAN SUMMERS of Syngenta won the Huddersfield Veterans Over 70s competition at Golcar Lib by the closest of margins.

Off a three handicap, he beat Harry Maxwell (5) from Thorpe Green 21-20 in the final.

Maxwell raced into an early lead and after six ends was 13-4 ahead. But five ends later the scores were level at 13 across. From then it was very close and Maxwell edged in front again to lead 20-17, but could not get the last chalk to win the game.

It could have gone either way at the last end with Summers lying game and Maxwell with the last wood getting into the head.

But the jack fell the right way for Summers.

It was an entertaining final refereed by M Hutchinson of Halifax, and the most consistent bowler on the day won, having beaten Brian Starkey in the quarter-finals and Alan Kaye in the semis finals to go through.

David Howroyd from Golcar Lib presented the Joshua Tetley Trophy and £100 prize money to Summers. Total prize money was £280 and thanks were expressed by Veterans president Frank Greenwood to Joshua Tetley’s and Golcar Liberal Club who were joint sponsors.
