THERE will be a lot of pride at stake when Huddersfield Veterans Inter-District home and away teams face each other in a special challenge match.
Following Huddersfield’s recent success in retaining the Yorkshire Veterans Inter-District League title for the Famous Grouse Trophy, the Huddersfield squad, sponsored by Perry’s Car Sales, will play for ‘bragging rights’ on Wednesday, September 12, at Brockholes (1.30).
Throughout their triumphant defence of the Inter-District League title there has been good-natured bantering between both teams as they bid to outdo each other’s results.
And this special end-of-season challenge match is set to be keenly contested.
Home side: Trevor Sykes, Jack Hewitt, Gordon Cowgill, Tony Young, Brian Starkey, Ronnie Norcliffe, Roy Sutton, Frank Greenwood, Harry Pennington, Michael Rhodes.
Away side: Frank Griffin, Mick McCluskey, Dennis Hirst, Donald Crowther, Barry Nicholl, Roy Tipple, Robert Armitage, Eddie Haigh, John Shaw, Peter Tuff.
In addition, the play-offs for the Perry’s Champions Trophy, begin on Tuesday, September 25 (1.30).
The preliminary rounds will be:
Section 5 winners v Section 2 winners at Marsh United, Section 1 winners v Section 4 winners (at Netherton Conservative), Section 3 winners v 6-man Section A winners (at Golcar Liberal), 6-man Section B winners have a bye.
The draw and venues for the semi-finals will be made on Thursday, September 27, to be played on Tuesday, October 2.
The winner of the inaugural running of the Huddersfield Veterans Bowling Association’s LD Trophy – for players competing for teams in the lower divisions of the league – was won by Barry Maxwell, of Meltham BC, and not Harry Maxwell as stated.
Harry is, in fact, Barry’s brother and was the referee for the final.
