ANDREW CRAVEN from Skelmanthorpe is the new holder of the Wrathall Trophy for 2008.
Craven beat two of his junior county teammates in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Frank and Jean Wrathall-sponsored Under 18 singles handicap for boys and girls, before winning 15-10 against young Thomas Holmes, from Newsome, in the final.
Andrew’s experience and long game was too good for his three opponents in the final stages at Netherton Con and although Thomas made him work for his title, Andrew always looked in control.
He beat competition from 42 boys and girls in the Huddersfield Junior Bowling Association who turned out for this very popular competition.
They played in six groups of five and two groups of six and the winners of each group qualified for the last eight.
After 90 games, played to 13-up, the qualifiers were:
Quarter-finals: Andrew Craven (Skelmanthorpe) (scr) 13 David Spencer (Brockholes BC) (scr) 5, Adam Mosley (Milnsbridge BC) (3) 5 Ryan Waller (Almondbury BC) (scr) 13, Thomas Holmes (Newsome WMC) (2) 13 Jessica Sykes (Milnsbridge BC) (5) 8 Craig Walsh (Newsome WMC) (scr) 13 Robert Hopper (Blakeborough Albion) (scr) 8.
Semi-finals: Craven 13 Waller 2, Holmes 13 Walsh 10.
Final: Craven 15 Holmes 10.
In the subsidiary competition for non-qualifiers, Jason Booth, of Waterloo, beat Stacey Shaw, of Almondbury BC, to get some consolation on just missing out on qualification in the main event.
Junior Competition secretary Nicola Walsh presented the Wrathall Trophy to Andrew, who was delighted to capture his first junior title after coming so close in many previous junior competitions.
The Huddersfield Boys Under 18 Merit takes place at Broad Oak on Sunday (scratch 9.45am, start 10.00 and the draw is made on the day).
In addition, tomorrow is the closing date for the 15-21 Mixed Singles competition, sponsored by Peter Thornton.
