ASHLEY DAYKIN enjoyed a fantastic double at the Griffin Bowling Club.

After landing the latest Sixteen title, the Yorkshire county player partnered George Fellows to glory in the Griffin Pairs final.

But there were some close calls for Daykin in both events.

In the Sixteen, sponsored by A and S Hirst, new young member Danny Radcliffe put up a superb performance in the first round to get to 20.

In fact, at 19s across, Radcliffe had one on with both Daykin’s woods four feet short, but he failed to make two and gave Daykin a crucial opening – which he took.

In the final against Mark Richardson, too, it was very close from 17s on, with Daykin just keeping the odd point in front to seal a 21-19 success.

In the Pairs, generously sponsored by Duncan Reeves and carrying a total prize pot of £650, Daykin and Fellows took the £220 first prize and trophy with a 21-16 success against Tony Marren and Richard Punshon.

Two fours helped Daykin and Fellows establish a lead and they were always at least five chalks in front to take a deserved success, but it was not so straightforward in their semi-final which went right to the wire.

Roy Sutton and John Ineson were level at 18s, only for Sutton to play a poor lead which allowed their opponents to get in and go on to the final.

On completion of the showpiece, club president Alan Hirst paid a big ‘thank you’ to the volunteer kitchen staff, to greenkeeper Eddie Haigh, club secretary Frank Greenwood for organising all the competitions and, most of all, to sponsor Reeves.
