All-England champion Ashley Daykin launched 2015 in style with victory in the JS Richardson New Year’s Day Competition at the Griffin Bowling Club.
Daykin, who triumphed in the big event at Cleckheaton Sports last summer, showed he’s still in all-conquering form as he took the title with a 21-13 win over fellow County man Andy Cairns in the final.
The event, sponsored for a 14th year by the Richardson family, finished in near darkness and it was close to start with – level at six across at the 11th end.
Daykin then got a 10 break before Cairns responded with four and, at this point, light was fading fast.
Both players then scored a single and a pair taking the score to 20-13, when Daykin scored the single needed to win.
Before the presentation, club president Alan Hirst thanked Lesley and Mark Wood for their work in the kitchen, Mark Richardson for an excellent surface to play on after such adverse weather and Richardson again, for representing the sponsoring family.
Richardson presented the prize monies, with the winner receiving £120 and the trophy, and Daykin responded by thanking all the Richardson family for their continued support for the event.
Daykin also praised the outstanding efforts of Hirst and club secretary Frank Greenwood for all they do for the club, and added he was delighted to win his first competition of 2015.
