HUDDERSFIELD’S Inter-District veterans suffered disappointment when they missed out on a place in the final of the annual one-day knockout competition.
After receiving a bye against North Kirklees, who couldn’t raise a team, Huddersfield faced hosts Sheffield at Crookesmoor Park.
Played in a superb atmosphere Mick McCluskey was the last Huddersfield player on the green against Albert Rogers, of Thurgoland.
Rogers had to win, while McCuskey needed to reach 18 for Huddersfield to steal in and win the aggregate.
But in the end Rogers won the game 21-17 which meant both teams were level on 201 points each.
The play-back rule was introduced but both teams had six winners apiece, resulting in the match going to the team with the highest winner, which was a 21-6 win for a Sheffield player, compared to a 21-8 win for a Huddersfield bowler.
Harry Pennington and Terry Randerson produced notable performances with Pennington fighting back from 17-8 down to win 21-19 and Randerson was 10-0 down but won 21-17.
