NEWSOME WMC A team won the 11th staging of the Junior Team Knockout competition in front of a large and very enthusiastic crowd at Syngenta.

Division I leaders Newsome A played Division II leaders Penistone, while in the other semi final, second-placed Division I team Brockholes faced Division II outfit Almondbury BC.

Brockholes and Penistone got off to flying starts.

Josh Brown beat Courtney Allert 21-8 and Daniel Peace beat Lauren Haigh 21-6.

Junior League secretary Geoff Martin said: “With both sets of spectators screaming their players on, one of the referees said they thought bowling was a quiet game – not with these kids it isn’t!”

So, with a great atmosphere brewing, Almondbury BC fought back with an excellent win from Stacey Shaw over girls’ junior merit winner Emily Rhodes 21-9 and Newsome also fought back with the next four winners against Penistone to seal the match 111-87.

Almondbury’s match with Brockholes was close after four blocks, but Almondbury’s, Ryan Waller and Jamie Shaw held their nerve against two very good opponents in Josh Bojczuk and Yorkshire county junior David Spencer not losing any ground to gain a 123-110 win over Brockholes.

The final was a one-sided affair with Newsome flexing their Division I muscles over the slightly less experienced Almondbury team.

Newsome won all six matches easily, wiping out the 24 start, and supplemented their imminent Tommy Wilson Cup title, with the Team Knockout Cup.

Martin added: “The final raised more than £260 so the finalists can look forward to reaping their rewards on presentation night and thanks go to Stephen Halsall, our main sponsor, and Syngenta Sports who also made donation towards the event.”
