PAUL SIGSWORTH added a fourth success of the Griffin's winter crown green bowling season when he won the Jacko's Memorial Handicap, sponsored by Fred Rhodes (Oldham) Ltd.
Sigsworth beat Mark Bramall 21-14 in the final, named after Peter Jackson, a former Yorkshire player and Griffin member, but the Netherton Con ace was in trouble in his semi-final against Slaithwaite's Wayne Dews when he had to fight back from 19-15 down to level at 19-19, before Dews missed the chance of pair to win the game and Sigsworth narrowly edged through before beating Meltham's Bramall to lift the Cup.
Bramall had earlier produced good victories against defending champion Peter Kain (21-11) and Griffin stalwart Ronnie Wormald (21-10) before he came up against his nemesis in the final.
Afterwards Sigsworth thanked Griffin secretary Andrew Wadsworth, president Alan Hirst and the committee, and also the new landlord of the Junction for making the players welcome and providing hot food for the bowlers on the cold days.
He also praised the efforts of greenkeeper, Phil Todd, who had prepared a great surface for the final and thanked John Webster, managing director of Fred Rhodes Limited, for sponsoring the competition.
