Steve Copeland (Royton) can pack his bucket and spade as he booked a place in Blackpool’s Champion of Champions after victory in the Clifford Crawshaw Memorial Classic, at Sowerby Bridge Hill Crest.

Copeland beat Glyn Cookson (Winsford) 31-26 in last weekend’s high-class final to earn a £1,400 pay-out and a place in the prestigious British Crown Green Bowling Association’s September showdown.

Copeland was clearly the man in form and took the scalps of former Yorkshire Merit winner Graham Hickey and Greater Manchester’s Gary Ellis en-route to the final showdown.

But, against Cookson, he didn’t have it all his own way.

He was trailing before a heavy cloudburst forced the bowlers off the green.

And when they returned Copeland adjusted superbly to the changing conditions to record his third success in the competition after previous victories stretching to back to 1989 and 1993.

The Huddersfield Conservative League’s Eric Simpson Mixed Pairs, takes place, at Lockwood Con, on Monday (6.30).

The draw will be made on the night and the pairings, featuring last year’s winners David Fisher and Lisa Rice, are:

J McMahon and S Dyson (Lockwood), T and A Butterfield (Moldgreen), S Tattersall and L Boustead (Moldgreen), G Senior and P Tattersall (Moldgreen), D Fisher and L Rice (Moldgreen), P and H Rangeley (Netherton), S Hirst and L Cliffe (Netherton), T Meigh and M Smith (Almondbury).
