JAKE SMITH, of Waterloo BC, produced a wonderful display of bowling in the final of the Arthur Maude Young Persons bowling competition at Burley Park, Leeds.

Huddersfield were represented by six boys in the final – Thomas Holmes (Newsome WMC), Michael Higgins (Almondbury Lib), Bradley Ramsden (Almondbury Lib), Jordan Ramsden (Almondbury Lib), Anton Haigh (Penistone BC) and Smith who were part of 20 players who had qualified throughout Yorkshire.

Thomas, Bradley and Jordan went out in their first round games, while Michael and Anton progressed to the quarter-finals.

But 13-year-old Jake Smith, from Waterloo BC, played two great games.

After gaining a bye to the quarters Jake beat the well-fancied Jonathan Wood, from Leeds, 15-12 and then gave eventual winner Cory McLeod, of Harrogate, a great game in the semi-final.

Coming back from 14-11 down to tie at 14-14, Jake led a six inch front wood for game, only for his opponent to produce the bowl of the competition by creeping in to finish two inches away.

Jake played just through with his next bowl and just shaved Cory’s with his last bowl without changing the outcome.

It was Jake’s first taste of bowling in a final day and he enjoyed every minute judging by the big smile on his face and an even bigger one when he received his £40 semi-final payout.
