WAYNE DEWS is champion of the Wharfside Workout Summer Handicap.

The Slaithwaite CBC player left Thongsbridge’s Nicky White once again the bridesmaid with a 21-19 victory in the Huddersfield Bowling League final.

White was runner-up to Paul Sigsworth last season.

Dews strung together a 10-break to take a 13-4 lead in the final with some superb corner bowling on the Linthwaite Hall green.

White fought back but Dews had a lucky knock when he went in-off his own wide bowl and took the jack from the middle of two close woods from White.

He didn’t capitalise with his lead, playing short, and conceded one but got back in at the next end only to lead short again. White then produced a five-break to level at 17-17 and later knocked his opponent in for two to hand Dews a 20-17 lead.

With the scorecard reading 20-19 to Dews, he played a short wood on the heavy green and White had two counting woods to win the match but the Slaithwaite player played for his own bowl, caught it full, and knocked it in for a 21-19 victory.

There was some great bowling throughout the day with the champion having to produce some superb woods to come from behind in his first game against Trevor Boothroyd.

He was also up against it in his second game as Linthwaite homester Alan Bamforth had a big break down the side of the green.

In the bottom half White had contests worthy of a final against Netherton duo Steven Haigh and Steven Hirst that could both have gone either way.

And prior to that Hirst had a real battle with Scott Fisher, of Moldgreen Con.
