YORKSHIRE county player Craig Gant picked up £140 as winner of the Dearne & Don Merit at New Mill.

He beat D Mallinson 21-7 in the final, the first 12 ends being shared for Gant to lead 8-6.

In the next 12 ends it was all Gant as he dropped only one point after bowling a straight mark from the bottom of the green to the top – bowling very close to run out a comfortable winner.

Three of the opening matches were easy wins, but Mallinson had a huge battle with S Marshall before winning through 21-17.

The semi-finals were again one-sided.

In his speech, Gant thanked the sponsor, A Hufton, the greenkeeper for providing such an excellent surface and the league officials for running the competition.
