LIKE father like son!

That’s the case for Lawrence and Graham Rogers – the latest family duo to turn out together in the Lockwood Windows Huddersfield Veterans Bowling League.

Graham, 65, has just joined the veterans team at Marsh United.

And he is convinced he can learn a thing or two from his father Lawrence.

He’s now 89, has been playing for Marsh United for over a quarter of a century already and has now been joined in the team by son Graham, who has just retired from Batley’s Cash and Carry after 44 years.

“Dad has been bowling and playing snooker at the club for 50 years.

“I’ve been a member myself for 40 – and it’s great to now be in the same Vets team,” said Graham, from Mount, who played football with Old Holmevalians in the District League in his younger days.

“I believe there are other fathers and sons who’ve played together in the Vets, but not that many, so we are delighted to be joining the list.

“It’s my first season, while dad is still using woods which are 90 years old and were used by his father before him!”

The veterans’ league provides hugely-popular competition all over Huddersfield.

The competition began back in 1970 and now boasts 60 teams playing in the league’s 10-man team sections.

There are also 16 teams who compete in the league’s six-man sections.

But veterans bowling is a complex issue. To play in the Huddersfield league, bowlers have to be 62 but to play for Yorkshire in county competitions, they must be 65.

And if they are good enough to compete at British Crown Green level, they can do so – aged just 60!
