JASON McCALMON from Rawthorpe Amateur Boxing Club is through to the pre-quarter-finals of the ABA Championships.

He competes on the weekend of April 3-4 for the chance to take a step nearer being crowned England’s No1 light-heavyweight – and also nearer the chance of representing his country at the 2012 Olympics.

McCalmon lost 4-2 in the Irish Championships, going out on a very harsh public warning.

Sean Reynolds did not compete in Ireland due to a training injury.

He is now in training hard, as are all the Rawthorpe boxers, for their annual tournament at the Galpharm on May 14 (contact coach Mark Reynolds on 07747 846977 or mark.leftjab@hotmail.co.uk).

Tomorrow the club’s light-middleweight Ozayr Ali Baig enters the Junior ABA’s in Wakefield.

The 17-year-old New College student will be having his first bout since being able to box again after being diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years ago.
