CHRIS ASTON believes his latest crop of boxers are learning fast.

The Huddersfield trainer was in the corner for three wins and a draw at the Sports Centre, where Tyrone Nurse led the way by beating seasoned Birmingham lightweight Jason Nesbitt on points over six rounds for a 10th win from 10 professional fights.

Middleweight Burt Warren stopped Colchester’s Drew Campbell in the third of six scheduled rounds while Josh Warrington, on debut, defeated clever Walsall featherweight Delroy Spencer on points over four rounds.

Jason Thompson had to be satisfied with a draw against Sheffield lightweight Jason Carr over six rounds, but Aston pointed out: "He performed well, and while you accept the referee’s ruling, many people had Jason winning four rounds and some five.

"When he reviews the fight on tape, Jason will see that he should have got the win, and that will give him confidence."

While Thompson, from Netherton, now has two draws from four fights, both against Carr, Warren, from Kirkburton, has three wins from three.

"He can be a slow starter, but when Burt found his range, Campbell paid," said Aston.

"He was landing some big shots, and the stoppage was a good call by the referee."

Leeds-based Warrington was up against an experienced operator in Spencer, and Aston pointed out: "Delroy’s had more than 100 fights and knows his way around the ring backwards.

"Josh started a bit too quickly, but it was still a good performance, and while most of those who fight Delroy are 23 or 24, we’re talking about an 18-year-old who has got a lot of potential."

Huddersfield’s Eugene Heagney, who fights under Michael Marsden in Leeds, was a points winner against Birmingham’s Anthony Hanna in a four-round featherweight contest.
