DEWBURY’S Alistair Brownlee’s challenge for an Olympic triathlon medal at the Beijing Games ran out of steam in the final kilometres as Germany’s Jan Frodeno took gold in a thrilling sprint finish.

Frodeno burst past Sydney champion Simon Whitfield to win his first Olympic title with New Zealander Bevan Docherty taking the bronze medal.

Brownlee came in 12th after sitting at the front on the bike and leading for much of the run leg before losing ground on the eventual medal winners at the end of the third lap of the four 2.5km loops.

Will Clarke had a strong run to finish just behind Brownlee in 14th after a disappointing swim left him with too much work to do on the bike while former world champion Tim Don withdrew early in the race after falling victim to a bout of food poisoning.
