HOLME Valley Wheelers were in winning form as the Yorkshire Points Summer Cyclo Cross came to a close.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers organised the event at Newsome High School and conditions were far from ideal after heavy rain.

Despite this 41 riders took to the start line in the Under 14 section race and it was a one-two for Holme Valley Wheelers with Lewis Byram claiming his fourth win of the season, Amira Mellor was in second place just 15 seconds behind.

Kirklees Cycling Academy riders Seth Waterman and Mason Hollyman were fourth and sixth, respectively, while Tom Whitworth was first Huddersfield Road Club rider home in 23rd and Gabriel McNae was first of the Star Wheelers in 33rd.

The Over 14s race had a field of over 70 riders taking on a challenging course designed by race organiser Graham Piccavey.

It was extremely competitive from the start with Ian Taylor (Craven Energy Tri/Jedi Cyclesport) and Rob Watson (Paul Milnes RT) battling it out.

With five of the eight laps completed Watson’s challenge was cut short when his tyre blew out which left Taylor with a comfortable gap from the chasing bunch of riders and he crossed the line over 40 seconds in front of James Thompson (Bone Shakers) and series winner Jack Clarkson (Pedalsport) in third another 40 seconds back.

Holme Valley Wheeler Richard Binks was best of the Huddersfield riders in 10th place, despite several crashes, while Owen Mitton was first rider home from Huddersfield Road Club in 20th and Ivan Boyes was first home for the Star Wheelers in 33rd.

The Summer Series presentation night is on Friday, September 2, at Elland Cricket and Bowling Club – contact Andy Whitworth on 01484 607830 for more details.

Huddersfield Pro rider Tom Murray (Sigma Sport Specialized) was in the thick of the action in the Olympic Test event which started and finished in London.

The Lindley rider was away in a four-man break, which included former Batley CC clubmate Liam Holohan (Team Raleigh), Kristian House (Rapha Condor Sharp) and Cleberson Weber (Brazil).

The breakaway had a six minute gap on the bunch after 30 miles, but they were soon reeled in on the run in to the finish as the Great Britain team started setting up a rather inevitable win for top sprinter Mark Cavendish.

Huddersfield time trailist Alastair Wareham (Team Swift) was an impressive fifth in the YCF 100 mile event.

Wareham clocked three hours 54 minutes 42 seconds for the distance, the winning time was an astonishing 3.40.46 from teammate Joel Wainman.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers time trialling trio Mark Thaxter, Tom Broadbent and Jason Fossey rode the Bridlington CC 10 Mile event.

Thaxter once again had a storming ride with 19.53, Broadbent finished 39 seconds back and was disappointed with his ride as he set off too fast and suffered on the last few miles. Fossey achieved his goal of the season in clocking just under 22 minutes.

Huddersfield Star Wheeler Ivan Boyes rounded off his 2011 road racing season with a creditable 13th place in the Dolphinholme Road Race.
