THE National Hill Climb Championship took place up the 1200-yard climb of Pea Royd Lane in Stocksbridge.
Dan Fleeman (Cervelo Test Team), whose last race was the Tour of Lombardy, flew up the climb 14 seconds faster than 2008 Champion Matt Clinton (MikeVaughan.co.uk) in 3.17.8, while Jim Henderson (Southport CC) was third in 3.39.4.
Ben Kellett (Holme Valley Wheelers) was best local rider in 32nd place in 4.14.5 and Paul Smith (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) also recorded an impressive time of 4.25.9, which gave him 48th place.
Stephen Robinson (Holme Valley Wheelers) was 60th in 4.36.0 and clubmates Leon Gledhill and Harmonie Waterman stopped the clock in 5.13.5 and 5.50.8. Huddersfield RC riders Owen Mitton and Paul Brierley were locked together in 65th and 66th place in times of 4.40.5 and 4.41.9.
The latest round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo Cross season takes place on Saturday at Bradley Woods Scout Camp.
The racing starts at 11am with the Under 16s, followed by the Under 12s at 11.45 and Seniors, Vets, Women and Juniors at 1pm.
Huddersfield Star Wheelers Go Ride coaching sessions for 6 to 14-year-olds are proving popular, with good numbers turning up at Newsome Sports College every Saturday (3-4pm). Information contact Ivan on 302846.
