HUDDERSFIELD professional rider Tom Murray had a great third-place result in the National Madison Championships at Manchester Velodrome.Š
Murray, in his second season riding for Sigma Sport Specialized, was teamed up with Team Sky’s Alex Dowsett for the 50km race in which one rider races while the other rests – they then relay each other into the race using a handsling.
The winner is the team with the most points, won in sprints every 20 laps, or the team that have gained the most laps lead on the rest of the bunch.Š
Madison races are usually pretty quick and Murray’s was no exception with an average speed of just short of 32mph!
Former Holme Valley Wheeler and Olympic Pursuit champion Ed Clancy (Rapha Condor Sharp) and teammate Andy Tennant took an early lead.
However, they struggled with the race distance and finished in fourth place, a lap down on the top three teams.
Luke Rowe (Team GB)Šand Peter Kennaugh (Team Sky) produced a dominant display in taking the win.
Tom Moses and Jon Mould (100%Me) were second, while Murray and Dowsett completed the podium.
Not content with this, Murray went on to win the Team Points race for Team Sky in the Revolution Track Meeting, alongside Alex Dowsett and Peter Kennaugh.
Holme Valley Wheelers’ Amira Mellor was in the mix in the Under 14 section girls race finishing third behind winner Charlotte Broughton (Leicestershire RC)Šand her clubmate Grace Garner in second.
Batley CC’s Martin Usher had a successful time at the first Friday Night Track League of 2011 at Manchester.
Usher won the 20-lap Points Race and 1km Scratch race in Group 4 and has been promoted to the top Group 5 for tomorrow’s racing.
Ivan Boyes (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was third in the Group 4 Devil race.
