HUDDERSFIELD Star Wheeler Mark Thaxter got his first time trial win in the Holme Valley Wheelers’ 10 at Ferrybridge.

Thaxter stopped the clock in 22min 10sec, just 3 seconds ahead of Doug Hart (Yorkshire Velo).

Thaxter’s clubmate Tom Broadbent also had a great ride and finished fifth in 23-32.

Best of the Holme Valley Wheelers was Gary Terry in 24-46, while juvenile section rider Leon Gledhill got round the course in 25-47.

Gledhill was also in action in Round 5 of the Paul Milnes Summer Cyclo Cross series at Temple Newsam in Leeds.

He won the Under 14 race, completing seven laps in just over 16min.

Clubmates Amira Mellor and Leon’s younger sister Felicity were fourth and 12th.

In the Over 14s, Jack Clarkson (Pedalsport) just got the better of Oli Webster (Crosstrax) and Matt Denby (Zepnat RT), with only 16 seconds separating the three riders.

Owen Mitton (Huddersfield RC) was best of the local riders with an impressive 14th place while Star Wheelers Graham Piccavey and Giles Bailey were 21st and 32nd.

The next event in the series is at Huddersfield New College on Wednesday, June 30, when the Under 14s’ race starts at 7pm.

The Sheffrec CC/JE James Evening Road Race for 3/4 Cat riders took place on the 2.2-mile Barlow triangle circuit near Chesterfield.

Conditions were tricky for the 54 riders as visibility was poor with low cloud, while a farmer had left mud all over the road on the finishing straight.

After seven laps of the 17, Danny Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) broke away to be joined after two more laps by VS Cycles’ Dominic Turner and Tony Grassby (Peak RC).

These three riders worked well together and soon pulled out a substantial 40 second gap on the bunch, which grew to a minute by the finish.

Lowthorpe claimed the win with Turner and Grassby in second and third.

This was a great reward for Brighouse-based rider Turner as he has been away in breaks in every race in 2010.

Ivan Boyes (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) just missed out on the top 10, finishing in 12th.

The sun was shining for the Hull City Road Club road race for 2/3/4 Category riders over 55miles of a rolling circuit near Beverley.

The race pace was very high with several breakaways in the early laps, but none were successful until six riders went clear with approximately four of the eight laps remaining.

Despite losing one rider, Tim Baldwin (Paul Milnes RT) with a puncture, the break stayed clear to the finish with Stephen Ward (Crosstrax) taking the win.

Ben Kellett (VS Cycles) made a welcome return to racing in Yorkshire after riding the Elite races in the North West region and the Junior road race series all year.

Kellett was in the points in 13th.

Teammate Gareth Owen struggled after crashing at Wakefield and finished in 33rd, with Star Wheelers Ivan Boyes in 34th.
