ED CLANCY admits he has eyes only for double gold at London 2012 as the influential Union Cycliste Internationale consider radical changes to the track programme in London.

Clancy captured team pursuit gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 alongside Paul Manning, Geraint Thomas and Bradley Wiggins – an event he hopes to defend in London when the Games start 1,000 days from Saturday.

And with the UCI’s revised programme set to include the omnium – a five-discipline event that will include a 200m time-trial, 5km scratch race, 3km individual pursuit, 15km point’s race and time-trial – Clancy is gunning for London double gold.

Former Holme Valley Wheeler Clancy, 24, insists the omnium suits his riding style down to the ground and coupled with the team pursuit, he could be the man to beat.

“If the omnium gets the nod then I’ll have a look at that – I think I can deliver,” said Clancy. “It suits my style of riding and for an endurance rider I’ve got a good old sprint in me, hence being first man in the teampursuit.

“There are a lot of people losing out like Bradley Wiggins with events being scratched but I think I’ll be one who gains because my only event was the team pursuit.

“Should the omnium get the go-ahead then I’d really have a good go at it.

“It’s an event in the World Championships every year but not the World Cups so it’s something I’d have to work on a lot in training as well.

“But I’d get a few run-outs and I’ll have a look at it this Worlds coming up (in March) if everything is going right and if it gets the Olympic nod.”

Clancy smashed the world record en-route to claiming gold in the company of Manning, Thomas and Wiggins in Beijing last July.

But with Manning retiring and Wiggins and Thomas signing lucrative road-racing contracts with Team Sky, the odds on Team GB repeating the trick in four years’ time are sure to lengthen.

However, Clancy, who claimed team world pursuit titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008, insists the lure of the London Games will ensure Wiggins and Thomas return to the track in three years’ time.

“A home Games in 2012 is enough to bring back anyone from the road,” added Clancy.

“It’s an opportunity that only comes around once in a lifetime and to win gold at your home Olympics will be a real experience.

“People have been saying that Wiggins and other riders won’t come back for London but I’m sure he will.

“My answer is Bradley will want to compete at London 2012 and in the meantime we’ve got a lot of good riders who can fill his boots.”
