MARK THAXTER has broken a Huddersfield Star Wheelers record which has stood for 17 years.

It was in the last time trial of the season and on reputably the fastest 10-mile course in the country, Levens in North Lancashire.

Thaxter recorded 20min 23sec, which beat the previous Star Wheelers club record of Chris Giles, set in 1992, by 19 seconds. That’s three club records broken by Thaxter in 2009 since switching to time trials from road racing.

It was busy for the hill climbers with the Pedalsport two-stage event at Halifax and the HCA event up Ripponden Bank, followed by the Yorkshire Velo event on Cragg Vale.

An ideal opportunity for riders to get some practice before the National Championships this Sunday on the Pea Royd Lane climb in Stocksbridge.

The 2008 National Champion Matt Clinton ( won the Pedalsport event in a combined time of 10min 50secs. Once again Andy Pearson (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was best of the local riders with fifth on the first climb and sixth on the second for a total of 13min 9sec. Paul Smith (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) recorded 13min 46sec and Paul Brierley (Huddersfield RC) 14min 18sec.

Pearson was third in the HCA event less than three seconds behind winner Andrew Metcalf (Wetherby Wheelers) who recorded 4min 12sec.

Holme Valley Wheelers Stephen Robinson and Ben Kellett were fourth and ninth with times of 4min 21.1sec and 4min 40sec. Owen Mitton and Paul Brierley (Huddersfield RC) were fifth and 10th in 4min 30.9sec and 4min 40.2sec.

It was a second defeat in as many weeks for Matt Clinton on the climb of Cragg Vale and, just like the previous week up Holme Moss, the winner was Daniel Shand (West Pennine CC) in a record time of 16min 9.6sec, with Clinton over a minute behind.

Local honours went to Robinson in eighth place in 20min 10sec while Andy Pearson was 10th in 20min 29sec. Steve Rimmer and Rachael Mellor (Holme Valley Wheelers) were 21st and 31st in times of 21min 52.6sec and 23min 38.8sec. Hill climb stalwart Paul Brierley was 23rd in 22min 4sec.
