THE Eric Biddulph Memorial Road Race, promoted by Huddersfield Star Wheelers, got off to a false start.

A field of 54 riders lined up for the 53km category 3/4 event only for the race to be stopped on the first lap as a JCB blocked the course just as Craig Gath (York Cycleworks) broke clear of the main bunch.

After a restart there were further incidents which made life challenging for the marshals as the riders encountered horses and also a running race that was using some of the same roads.

Ben Page (VS Cycles) attacked early on, but a lone break was never going to make any headway with the strong winds keeping the speeds down to 10mph.

With four laps to go Karl Denton (Yorkshire Velo) and Karl Downes (Star Bikes) broke clear.

The two escapees never looked like being caught, and 50 yards from the finish Downes kicked for the line but it was Denton who came out on top.

Robert Blackburn (JE James) completed the podium places.

Best local finisher was Page in sixth, his teammate Dominic Turner was 23rd.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Andrew Pearson and Tom Broadbent finished in 18th and 24th, respectively.

The seventh round of the Paul Milnes Summer Cyclo Cross series was staged at New College.

The Under 14 section were underway first and Seb Marsh (Paul Milnes RT) took first place completing six laps in 17 minutes 8 seconds.

Alex France (Holme Valley Wheelers) was 10th with clubmate Felicity Gledhill two seconds behind in 11th.

Tom Whitworth was 12th riding for Huddersfield RC and Christopher Bullett (Huddersfield Star Wheelers), riding in his first event of 2010, was 14th.

At the back of the field there was a three-way battle between four-year-old Soljai Waterman (Holme Valley Wheelers), Dylan Boyes and Florence Whiteley (Huddersfield Star Wheelers), both aged five, Dylan just got the better of Soljai and Florence in the sprint finish.

The Seniors race was very close with just over a minute separating the first five riders.

Ian Taylor (Craven Energy Tri) was first with Jack Clarkson (Pedalsport CC) and Matt Denby (Zepnat RT) in hot pursuit.

Richard Binks (Holme Valley Wheelers) lost out to Jon Watson (Team Charge Bikes) in the battle for seventh place and Binks’ clubmate Andy France was 21st.

Huddersfield RC riders Andy Whitworth and Dave Senior were 30th and 36th, with Star Wheelers’ Ivan Boyes and Giles Bailey 34th and 37th.

The next event is at Brooksbank School, Elland on Wednesday.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Ruby and Dylan Boyes enjoyed success at the West Riding Grass Track League at Roundhay Park, Leeds.

In the 500m handicap race for riders in groups D/E/F Ruby took the win. Not to be outdone by his sister Dylan claimed victory in the 500m handicap for E/F riders.
