MTS CYCLE Sports’ Thomas Mein proved the dominant force as Huddersfield Star Wheelers staged the final round of the Pedalsport Summer Cyclo-Cross series at Newsome High School.
A field of 36 riders competed in the Under 14 race and for once the Pedalsport team didn’t have it their own way as Mein led from start to finish.
Teammates Jenson Young and Matt Taylor (Pedalsport) were second and third.
Kirklees Cycling Academy siblings Harry and Fin Cooper had a fantastic battle throughout the race with Harry finishing in seventh and Fin in eighth, while Star Wheeler Lewis Gardner was next home of the local riders in 11th and Tom Whitworth (Huddersfield RC) was 15th.
In the overall standings, based on a rider’s best six results in the series, Whitworth was an impressive fifth, while Young pipped Taylor to first position by just two points.
A massive field of 94 riders were on the start line for the Over 14 race which set off at a frenetic pace on the bone dry playing fields.
Jack Clarkson (Team Hope Factory Racing) and Ian Taylor (Craven Energy Tri) were fighting out the win with Clarkson crossing the line first by just one second after 45 minutes of racing, while Billy Harding (Paul Milnes RT) was 23 seconds back in third place.
Best of the Huddersfield riders was Andy Whitworth (Huddersfield RC) in 23rd, his clubmate Owen Mitton was 29th, and Holme Valley Wheeler Lee Brown finished in 30th.
First of the Star Wheelers home was Ed Wolstenholme in 34th.
Seth Smith (Paul Milnes RT) won the overall prize, tied on points with Andy Peace (Crosstrax) he won the title thanks to a better finish in the final round.
Whitworth and Mitton were 20th and 21st, respectively, with Star Wheelers Ivan Boyes 22nd and Graham Piccavey 25th and Lee Brown (Holme Valley Wheelers) was 28th.
Kirklees Cycling Academy promoted a Summer Road Race for second, third and fourth category riders.
A strong field of 45 riders had 10 laps of the 5.5 mile rolling Birdsedge course and Sam Ward (Team Hope Factory Racing) and Graeme Rose (Dirtwheels Cycles) attacked from the gun.
The duo were never in danger of being caught by the chasers, and Rose attacked halfway round the last lap and crossed the line on his own with Ward 30 seconds back.
Alastair Hepworth, riding for Brighouse based team VS Cycles, finished in sixth place and was first Junior, Richard Binks (Clay Cross RT) was ninth.
