Father and son Dave and Josh Wenzel will meet in the Huddersfield Snooker and Billiards Association’s snooker handicap final – the first showdown between father and son.

The pair, who play for Deighton WMC, will clash at Canalside next Wednesday and League secretary John Wilson said: “It is the first time ever in the League’s history that we have a father and son in the Open Snooker Handicap final,.

“It’s a remarkable achievement considering the high number of entries that we get – particular in this competition.

“I hope that Josh doesn’t regret having given his father a prize that he had won – a series of snooker coaching lessons.

“Either Josh couldn’t attend them, or he thought that dad could do with some help more than him.

“Either way Dave has benefited from the coaching this season and it promises to be a keenly fought family affair.

“Josh will be giving his dad some 20 points start each frame, so he may have his work cut out.

“But who knows what will happen on the night, dad has already posted that if his lad wins he will be made homeless – I think that he was joking.

“One thing is for certain though, whatever happens on the night neither father or son will be giving an inch to their opponent.”

The first of the finals series was the Billiards Handicap showdown, which was preceded by the semi-finals with the last four made up of Matthew Peaker, Steve Berry, Paul Rayner and Frank Wrathall.

Rayner (65) and Berry (100) met in the first semi which swung to and fro before a run of 20 from Berry helped see him through 200-139.

He was joined by reigning champion Peaker (-100), who compiled a 51 break to overtake Wrathall (110) and win 200-165.

However, despite making early in-roads into the handicap with a break of 55, the holder relinquished his crown to Berry who won the title 200-186.
