Top players Johnnie Chan and Karen Smith enjoyed an impressive medal haul at the EITF European Taekwondo Championships held in Italy.

Denby Dale’s Smith took four medals and Huddersfield’s Chan three from the international meeting in Andria.

Smith won three golds in the -54kg Veteran sparring, Veteran Ladies team pattern and Veteran Ladies team sparring categories, and added a bronze in the fourth degree Veteran patterns.

Chan struck gold in the fifth degree patterns, silver in the Senior Men’s team power and bronze in the -85kg Senior Men’s sparring.

Smith works as a pub manager at the Black Bull in Midgley and has been a player for 17 years, achieving her fourth degree black belt in 2013.

She trains in Morley with Ray Thackray and started training with the England squad in 2014, securing a place on the Women’s Veteran team this year.

Originally from Oxford, 35-year-old engineer Chan, who works for Cummins Turbo Technologies, has lived in Huddersfield for 10 years .

An ITF taekwondo coach at Royds Hall Sports Centre, Chan trains and competes with the England squad.

Having practiced taekwondo for 22 years, he is a fifth degree black belt and an international instructor, having received the rank from Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha.
