KIRKBURTON Karate Club are celebrating – at the double.

Not only has Andrew Taylor been named Student of the Year by the British Institute of Karate Organisation, but long-serving member Fay Wheatley has become a Fourth Dan.

Both awards were presented at a BIKO National Training Course in Cambridge by Peter Spanton, the Eighth Dan main instructor for the Higashi Association.

His club’s Student of the Year, 16-year-old Taylor has just gone into the men’s cadets competitions and is training now with the BIKO national squad.

Fay, a PE teacher at Moorend, has been with the Kirkburton club for almost all its 20 years and has been recognised for her dedication to the sport, to competing and to helping others both with their examinations and Dan grades.
