Euan Wilson-Baig from Huddersfield won a Grade 4 Under 18s tennis tournament in Manchester – at the age of just 14!

It was his first event since defending his Yorkshire Under 14 crown last July, and he came through with flying colours for the Edgerton-based club despite being the youngest competitor taking part.

Wilson-Baig won his first match 4-2 4-2, and, in the semi-finals faced the No1 seed from Lancashire, Michael Yeung.

Again he put in a terrific performance  to win 4-2 4-2 and go through to the final, where he took down second seed George Trudgill 4-1 5-4 (7-4).

The win means Wilson-Baig – who remains an Under 14 player until Easter – will be able to step up to the Grade 3 tournament to be held later this week in Hull.

Ben Gudzelak, who is Head of Racket Sports at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and coaches Wilson-Baig, explained: “Euan showed great maturity at the tournament, dealing with some dubious line calls by just getting on with it and not letting the situation affect him.

“It is the right way of dealing with that situation but it is not easy to actually do.

“His work ethic in training has been very good and this has resulted in improvements to his game.

“He has particularly made big improvements on his footwork and, if he continues to work hard on this area, he will develop into a great player.”

The win for Wilson-Baig follows a success at Grade 3 level for fellow Huddersfield player Emily Morton, who won the Under 18s at USN Bolton Arena, sponsored by TBS Sports.

The Shelley College student, 16, won four tough matches, two of them in third-set tie-breaks.
