Former champion Mike Tolman from Huddersfield and Thongsbridge ace Dan Sinclair are hoping to upset the odds in the Fuirtypot Open tennis tournament.

Both are through to the semi-finals at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis & Squash Club, but so too is No1 seed and defending champion Peter Ashley (Holcombe Brook).

Tolman beat Thongsbridge’s Andrew Atkinson 7-6 6-2 to make the last four, while Sinclair overcame Huddersfield’s Ben Gudzelak in three sets, 6-7 6-3 10-7.

Ashley went through against Andre Earnshaw 6-2 6-1, but Earnshaw’s brother LIam redressed the balance by completing the semi-final line-up with a 6-1 6-4 success against James Kilbride.

In the Women’s Singles, the highest-ranked player left, Emily Sim, was surprisingly knocked out, losing 1-6 6-3 10-6 to Rebecca Hall.

Natalie Wall beat Abigail Wild 6-4 6-4, while Isabelle Hearnshaw had a comfortable run against Esther Jones, winning 6-1 6-1.

The final quarter-final went to Jayanne Palmer, who defeated 13-year-old Cheshire player Ellie Aldrich 0-6 6-4 10-8.

The Men’s and Women’s Singles finals start at 10am on Saturday, followed by the Doubles finals.
