AFTER four days of storm clouds and rain, the sun finally made an appearance on the Algarve and Tommy Ward and Arthur Henshaw enjoyed a right old burn-up around Boavista.

Away from the main three-day Examiner Challenge, the Fourball Betterball is another eagerly-awaited competition, and once again it was the top two protagonists in the main event who contested this one.

Only this time, the result went the other way, with Henshaw getting the better of runner-up Heyes, along with his partner John Morse.

Boavista is without doubt a beautiful complex and a delightful course (even the statues looked to be wearing a smile) and no-one looked happier than Henshaw and Ward who between them carded no fewer than 9 nett birdies and one gross birdie as they accumulated 45 points to win the event by two points from Heyes and Morse, the latter having a nett eagle on the par three fourth hole.

A superb tally of 24 points on the front nine set Henshaw and Ward up for victory with six three-pointers and just three pars giving them a lead which they never relinquished.

No other pairing managed to break the 40-point barrier, with Wendy Dufton and Jack Thewlis sharing 38 points apiece with Sue Morse and Brian Wilson.

Leading positions:

Winners: Henshaw and Ward 45pts; 2 Heyes and Morse (43); 3 Dufton and Thewlis (38), 4 Morse and Wilson (38); 5 Eddie Doherty and David Makin 37.
