CHRIS HANSON produced a stunning 66, six under par, to head the Open Championship regional qualifying at Pannal yesterday and lead the 15 who advance to the final qualifying test in Lancashire next Monday and Tuesday.
The Crosland Heath man was among the later finishers and he ousted home club member Duncan McCarthy from No1 position, Yorkshire county man McCarthy, a Leeds Union team player before moving from Moortown to Pannal this year, having sat in the lead for four hours after a blemish-free 67 that included five birdies.
Final qualifying is at Southport & Ainsdale, Hillside and West Lancs next Monday and Tuesday.
Hanson had a lone bogey at the 471 yards par five fourth which should have been meat and drink for him but his drive ended in thick rough and he had no option but to chop out.
Having birdied the tricky second from 20 feet, Hanson hit the birdie trail big time around the turn after picking up a shot at the fifth, hitting a 9-iron stiff. Another 9-iron to eight feet at the ninth was followed by a chip and putt birdie at No11, his trusty 9-iron got him to six feet at the 12th and at the long 13th, he was on in two with two 3-woods and two putted for another birdie.
A driver and 3-iron to the fringe at the par five 16th saw him have to settle for par with three putts, then he made a saving up and down after going through the green at the 190 yards 17th. A snaking 20-foot putt rounded off his day at 18 which he reached with a 3-iron and sand wedge.
Hanson, whose brother Richard, a Crosland Heath member, was on the bag, said after booking a final qualifying place for the second time: “I’ve been playing well all year and today it all came together. I had 27 putts in all after hitting 14 greens in regulation.”
