IN-FORM Chris Dyson carried his classy form at the Yorkshire Amateur championship into the Halifax, Huddersfield Union Team Championship, turning in two top scores to lead Woodsome Hall to the title in what developed into a thrilling shoot-out with defending champions Bradley Hall.

Playing over their home course was an advantage but Woodsome Hall’s quartet of Dyson, Richard Holt, Adam Durie and Graham Cox had only a single stroke edge on Bradley Hall in the final analysis.

It was largely down to Dyson’s storming 67 that Woodsome led by a couple of shots at the halfway mark, a lead that was halved by Bradley Hall despite Jim Fairhurst finding it a struggle and posting 80.

Plus one player Dyson, 35, had proved his class at Alwoodley in beating the home club’s Will Shucksmith, a former British Universities champion who had claimed the coveted Alvin Trophy as leading qualifier then going out to eventual finalist Nigel Sweet in a memorable match, both being five under par going into the back nine and the Woodsome Hall man losing out only over the closing holes.

He took that form into the team championship, an event sponsored by Woodsome pro John Eyre, and by tagging on a second round 70 carried off the individual prize by a shot from Bradley Hall’s Andy Whitworth.

Fine back-up to Dyson came from Holt, Dunne and Cox, who all carded two rounds in the 70s.

The shot of the day came from Meltham’s Graham McLean who, on the 17th, pushed his tee shot into the middle of the professional’s practice ground, his ball ending up in a cluster of practice balls. It was found in the allotted time and McLean produced a masterly recovery to the heart of the green and holed for a birdie.

Dyson was the man of the moment, however. Woodsome Hall non-playing captain John Hirst, on receiving the Founders Trophy after the club’s second title win in three years, expressed his pride in his team, particularly Dyson, remarking on his splendid show in the Yorkshire Amateur.
