After 14 years as a professional, Rob Booth has just had his best-ever season.

Booth, 31, who is attached to Crosland Heath, has finished runner-up in the PGA Yorkshire Order of Merit and earned a place in the three-man White Rose team in the regional Inter County Championships at Bolton on Monday.

If all goes to plan, he and his team mates will progress to the Belfry where they will successfully defend Yorkshire’s PGA Inter County title.

Everything started to fall into place when Booth started working at the Crosland Heath pro shop nearly five months ago.,

Suddenly the pressure fell away, he virtually stopped practising and the results and money started flowing in.

A highlight of the season was defending his PGA Yorkshire Classic title, shooting three under par to beat 60 other professionals and claim the £1,500 first prize.

However, perhaps his best win came three weeks ago at the north region Volkswagen tournament at Crewe the biggest pro am on the PGA calendar. He beat a very strong field of 58 by one shot to finish on four under par and win £1,000.

The only downside was having to stay on to make an acceptance speech in front of 500 players and guests, which meant missing his mother’s 70th birthday party in Essex.

He did, however, buy her “a very nice present” out of his winnings.

By finishing in the top 25 of the PGA England and Wales (North) Order of Merit, he has also earned full playing rights for all PGA events in 2016.

Crosland Heath professional Richard Lambert allows Booth the flexibility to fit his pro shop and teaching hours around his tournament fixtures -and his schedule has been exhausting.

Last Monday and Tuesday he played in the PGA Blackpool tournament and on Wednesday worked from 8am to 8.30pm at Crosland Heath.

On Thursday he set off at the crack of dawn to play in a competition in Doncaster before returning to work for three hours, and then putting in another 8am to 6pm shift at the Heath on Friday.

“I’m knackered, but I absolutely love it; it’s brilliant,” said Booth. “The last few months have been really busy, but it seems to be a successful formula.

“I really enjoy the shop work and doing lessons and it’s great to see some of the players I coach having success at the club.

“I have found that the more I do outside of the tournaments, the easier the golf gets.

“I’ve almost stopped practising! I just do a couple of hours a week - usually at a tournament before I tee off - and my coaching sessions with Richard have gone from an hour a week to 10 or 15 minutes.

“There is no pressure on me, and I think I have only shot over par about three times this season and I’ve only missed two cuts in over 40 starts.

“I maybe could have done a bit better in a couple of competitions, but overall I am over the moon with how things have worked out for me this season.”

Booth will retain his two main sponsors for the 2016 season: Hudson’s Office Furniture of Dewsbury and Glenbrae.
